D'atra Hicks was born 1968 in Harlem, New York and started out singing the same way a lot of artists started out; in church. This eventually led to forming a duo with older sister Miriam. They didn't get a record deal but D'atra did get a lead role in the most successful off-Broadway black musical. She landed a solo deal in 1989 with Capitol Records and got to work with some of the greater names in showbizz like Jellybean, Will Downing, Peabo Bryson and Narada on her own self-titled debut album. The album didn't contain any hits. She later duetted with Freddie Jackson, Gary Brown and Peabo Bryson on their albums. Last musical outing known to date is along with Alyson Williams, Carol Douglas, Peggie Blu and Freda Payne on the 2003 Wanda Dee album, The goddess is here. |
