Mantronik was born as Kurtis Khaleel September 4, 1965 in Jamaica but he and his family soon moved to Canada and ended up in New York at the end of the '70s. He started out as a dj at a Manhattan record store. It was around this time he teamed up with MC Tee. After the duo had put together a demo tape, they gave it to William Socolov, president of Sleeping Bag Records which led to their first record deal. Fresh is the word became the first single, soon followed by classic tracks like Ladies, Basslines and Scream. All this succes led to a major record deal at Capitol in 1987. After the release of In full effect, MC Tee left the band to join the Air Force and was replaced by LL Cool J's cousin Bryce Luva and DJ Dee who at his turn was Mantroniks' cousin. With vocalist Wondress at the vocals of Got to have your love he definitely reached the European audience. After disbanding in 1991 Kurtis Mantronik kept on working as a producer.
